BIOGRAPHY

Hello students and visitors!  Welcome to my site.  I am very excited to populate this page with interesting guitar and bass lessons.  My intentions are to help you become a better musician.  Hopefully, you'll visit frequently as I will be posting new lessons and techniques on a regular basis.  The Lessons section can be found at the bottom of this page.

Or click here to go to:
Lesson 1: Major Pentatonic

Lesson 2: Minor Pentatonic

To all of my students:  Practice 'til your fingers bleed!

Kind Regards,

Jason Leen

ABOUT ME:

1983-1997 - The Early Years

My musical adventure began when I was six.  My mother took me to piano lessons with an old lady (I can't remember her name, but she scared me).  I don't think I liked music very much at that time because of all the boring monotonous drills she put me through.  It was boot camp.  However, I must say those drills truly helped me in the long run.  By the time I was twelve, I passed grade 5 Royal Conservatory of Music.  My parents allowed me to choose an instrument that I wanted to do.  My older brother, who had been playing guitar since he was six, convinced me to pick up the bass guitar.  We accompanied each other playing Metallica riffs note for note.  We competed in guitar battles in the high school cafeteria during lunch hour.  We also played in several bands together through out our early teenage years.

1998-2004 - Seismic (Sarah Deluca, Dean Watson, Helder Mendoca, Tim Watson, Jason Leen)

My professional career in music began after highschool when a group of my close friends got together to form a band called Seismic.  Seismic released one album entitled Portions (Coqi records, 2002).  The album is a jazz-rock experiment which topped college and university charts in 2003.  In 2004, Seismic took the album and its live show to the east coast of Australia touring all major cities including Sydney, Canberra, Melbourne, and Byron Bay.

2005-2008 - Quarter Life (Peter Voith, Anders Drerup, Shane McEwan, Tyler Kealey, Jason Leen)

Quarter Life is the next project I am proud to say I became involved with.  This band, with Peter Voith at the helm, released a couple of albums, one which I played on entitled Hands On Today (Independant, 2007).  We were invited to play in Cuba at the Havana Jazz festival in 2007.  We also opened for ZZ Top at the Cisco Ottawa Bluesfest and Thornley at the HOPE beach volleyball tournament.

2005-present - Bourbon Brothers
(Shawn Tavenier, Peter Voith, Anders Drerup, Shane McEwan, Jason Leen)

Coinciding with the inception of Quarter Life gave rise to a  five-piece cover band called The Bourbon Brothers.  We've rocked almost every local bar here in Ottawa.  We have played over 400 shows together since we began playing.  The Bourbon Brothers are all part of their own seperate original projects mainly being Peter Voith Trio and Silver Creek.

2009-present - Jackson Miles
(Peter Voith, Ben Cooper, Jason Leen)

Jackson Miles is a music company that Peter Voith, Ben Cooper and I are ambitiously working on.  For more information, please visit the home page.

VIDEO OF THE DAY
You need Flash player 8+ and JavaScript enabled to view this video.

Found this old Seismic video  that we shot back in 2003.  The song is called S.O.S.  Directed by Jon Knautz.  I can't remember the names of the actors...so sorry.  The band consists of Helder Mendonca, Dean Watson, Tim Watson, Sarah DeLuca and myself.  Enjoy!

LESSONS

Thanks for stopping by my online lessons.  I will be posting lessons once a week.  Please use, print and practice with them.  I will be posting audio files of each lesson soon.  Stay tuned!

Lesson 1: Major Pentatonic
This is a lesson on the major pentatonic in all box patterns across the fretboard.  I use G major as the example tonic for this lesson.

Lesson 2: Minor Penatonic
This lesson is on the minor pentatonic.  You'll notice how closely the patterns relates to the major pentatonic.  Keep an eye out for this.  I use "A" as the example root for this lesson.
